Asakusa
Attractions
Places to Visit
Senso-ji Temple & Naka-mise Street
https://share.google/YBk3Ia02MueJ4Oqff
The main reason people visit Asakusa, awe-inspiring temple and surrounding area with loads of tourism stalls.
Ninja Museum
https://share.google/Nu54LrVrNi8kER9U2
Actually a great museum on the history of Ninja around Japan. Book in advance.
⭐ Hoppy Street (Hoppy-Dori)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/hDpyozaszEoteqWk9
Eating spot with lots of 'rough' izakayas, even though this is mainly a restaurant spot, it's worth a visit regardless. Hoppy is a locally brewed drink that you should try.
Shotengai (Traditional Shopping Streets)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/RNoqFNGeksncUydw6
If you make your way towards the marker, you'll find a maze of indoor-ish streets - there's no easy way to navigate, just have fun.
Imado Maneki-neko Shrine (Waving Cat Shrine)
https://share.google/H8pav529cdEXjRkkb
Shrine for waving cats.
Daikon Shrine (BIG RADISH)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/QqWoFL1F7SHbSHEn9
It's a shrine with loads of giant radish, what other reason do you need?
Sumida River Walk
https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZjFDLHDPZMaGXk6n8
The link is to a bridge which acts as a good starting point. I recommend starting on the East side of the river and making your way North before crossing back over, and walking South into the main, more built-up area of Asakusa.
Kappa-bashi (Kitchen Street)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/HB5uwWUtQ2TCCo5P7
The famous kitchen street where typically (at least in the past) restaraunters have gone for wholesale supplies. Now most famous for the myriad of knife and other kitchenware shops.
Free Roof Terrace
https://share.google/t6GBSORJ5bYkWfvx0
Free observation deck on the 8th floor of the tourist centre. Shop in the lower ground too.
Buddhist Temple Higashi Hongan-ji
https://maps.app.goo.gl/MTeGPBSkXky92hpq7
A "smaller" out of the way temple, slightly different (slightly spooky) feel to many of the others.
Batting Cages
https://maps.app.goo.gl/eeNP7A6t4cJy42J47
Arcade-style pay to play batting cages. You can put a coin in a machine for a token, give the token to another machine, and hit baseballs with a bat. It's located upstairs, above an arcade.
⛓️ Taito Game Arcade
https://maps.app.goo.gl/GetcqjCw7bFMonKM9
Taito is a big chain of arcades present across Tokyo and Japan, lots of claw machines and games that you might not be able to figure out how to play.
Shops
- ⛓️ Big Uniqlo with some location-unique merch
https://maps.app.goo.gl/PR2vZbA8GW6p4T7u8 - ⛓️ Donki Shop (useful stuff, not useful stuff, & souvenirs chain) https://maps.app.goo.gl/ayi1nQCS7RehZSnR6
- Souvenir Shop for trinkets, insence, traditional items etc. https://maps.app.goo.gl/3Udve4T99urfD6Z46
- Asakusa ROX, local shopping centre with many shops. https://maps.app.goo.gl/CcSdu71vifspkHar9
Food & Drink
⭐ Tsukemen-kobo
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Wfbc5pweKAMB65jz6
Absolutely my favourite local spot, literally everything on the menu is great. Tablet to order.
Taiyaki shop (fish-shaped stuffed waffle)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/c1mLsXvG8XNq6Qx19
Love the custard one. Very typical festival snack food.
⛓️ Yakiniku-like
https://maps.app.goo.gl/7ydGcTLcHq1nNeAF6
Grill your own meat with rice, sauce, soup, other toppings. Tablet to order. This is on the 4th floor or something, so just get in the lift (even if it feels weird).
⛓️ Isomaru Suisan (Seafood)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/vRkuvhTQowxMtskm9
Large menu of "finger food", order lots of small dishes. Most are seafood. QR code ordering.
⛓️ Torikizoku (Grilled Chicken & Meat)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/yRKhk3ZJiAapmTzx7
Common chain of barbecued meats, possibly the closest thing to a Wetherspoons. Tablet order. This is one of the absolute best value for money places you can go - fixed price for everything (around 450 yen last time I checked, drinks included).
Suke6 (Modern Western-style diner)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/CLZTtnJY7Wjwa3wN9
Good vibes bakery/ café/ diner.
⛓️ Saizeriya (Microwave Italian)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/25PKwcHwQnTCWK2s5
Cheapest sit down meal you will find. The food is hit and miss, but I love it for the simple joy of ordering eggs for 50 yen a serving.
⛓️ Fuglen (Trendy Café)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/gmr9v9wN4yNvVynB8
Nice coffee and pancakes/ crepes.
Tasuke (Ramen and Tsukemen shop)
https://maps.app.goo.gl/WARz3T5AEuMovQUB8
Tsukemen is noodles you dip in a sauce - there's a garlic tsukemen which is incredible. Many good options at this shop.
"Melonpan" - sweet bread that looks like a melon
https://maps.app.goo.gl/zc2QWUZBoBc5ehQd6
Popular snack stall with fresh baked melonpan daily. There's an option to have it with icecream which is supposed to be incredibly good. Also next to a matcha shop/ café.
